How to waterproof the multi-storey basement of a new building? In this article an interesting foreign reference from Volteco. To waterproof the basement of a luxury hotel in Ankara, the choice fell on Amphibia, Volteco’s hydro-reactive membrane.
The project for the construction of the new MEB Hotel Concept located in the university part of Ankara, in a rather central area, was challenging from many points of view, especially considering that the final goal was a multi-storey basement for a parking area.
First of all, excavation interventions in partially built-up or particularly congested areas, such as this one, require the design of works that allow the construction of the excavation without creating damage to the adjacent areas where other buildings are present. The Bottom Up excavation, in these circumstances, is the most suitable and was the one chosen as it involved the construction of a “provisional box” within which the final structure was then built. It is a sort of support on all sides necessary both to contain the surrounding soil and to prevent the entry of groundwater.
The presence of the aquifer at about -6 meters below ground level was decisive in the choice of Amphibia as a waterproofing membrane. A necessary choice linked, first of all, to the performances of Volteco technology in the presence of water but also to the ease of installation against diaphragms walls that distinguishes Amphibia membrane, considering that the final project provided that the basements were 3 floors. Not to forget, then, the complexity of the handling operations in such a deep construction site and the Amphibia sheets, thanks to their lightness, have really made the difference.
The presence of particularly smooth laying surfaces, horizontal and vertical, facilitated the start of the work by allowing to limit the regularization operations of the same that took place in any case with mortar, saving time and energy.
Provision of waterproofing of the slab and walls was carried out by laying Amphibia horizontally on the cleaning lean concrete and vertically on the walls by nailing, also exploiting the self-sealing capacity of the sheets.
The operations were particularly rapid even where “more complex” geometries had to be followed with the sheets both horizontally (for example in lift pits) and vertically in the area of the tie rods thanks to the lightness, manageability and flexibility of Amphibia.
After the laying of the sheets and reinforcements, the stalls and walls were built, proceeding from the bottom upwards; also in this case the installation did not take place in full to the construction of the structures but at the same time as the execution of the same from the bottom up.
This is just one of the many Amphibia installations Launched on the market in 2017, it immediately revolutionized the concept of waterproofing, obtaining important feedback and winning the favour of professionals in the sector, both in Italy and abroad, from the United States to France, from the United Kingdom to Switzerland, from Spain to Hong Kong, where it is often chosen for waterproofing the basements of new buildings or existing structures.
