Amphibia self-repairing membrane for new Best Western Hotel in Fiumicino

2'

Volteco’s Amphibia membrane, in synergy with Wt Construction and Wt Break technologies, was chosen to redevelop the underground space of the Best Western Hotel in Fiumicino, ensuring maximum waterproofing.

The new Best Western Hotel located in Fiumicino has undergone waterproofing work, for which Volteco technologies were adopted. The intervention involved a flat surface of approximately 1200 m2 and a vertical surface of 1600 m2, located in the basement of the building, used for service areas such as kitchens and laundry. The aim of the redevelopment was to provide the rooms with effective protection against water infiltration, protecting the health and well-being of the workers employed.

The spaces in fact attest to the presence of radon gas, a natural gas that originates from the decay of uranium contained in the ground. Being imperceptible to the senses, it is difficult to detect; furthermore, it is inert as it does not react chemically with the surrounding environment. However, it is radioactive and can therefore represent a serious health hazard if not kept under control.

Given these premises, to which must be added the critical issues given by the proximity to the sea and the strong presence of salt water, it was decided to use the innovative Amphibia system, a multilayer hydro-reactive waterproof membrane with recognized performances.

The preliminary phase saw the fixing of a steel sheet pile, intended to delimit the construction site area and contain the water thrusts that, already during the excavation operations, began to leak out.

The construction site then began with the creation of a lean concrete on the bottom to regularize the level. This was followed by the laying of Amphibia 3000 grip and, subsequently, the creation of the slab, leaving the possibility of turning up the Amphibia membrane on the edges.

The next steps involved the casting of the vertical partitions and the positioning of Wt Construction, the hydro-expanding profile in reinforced EPDM rubber for the casting joints, with the additional insertion of Wt Break, the self-sealing box profile, which guarantees a greater seal and allows the fracturing of the concrete to be controlled and therefore programmed. For the overlaps, Bi Mastic adhesive mastic was used and Akti-Vo 201 hydro-expanding mastic for all the sealing.

The attention to every detail was what most characterized the construction site of the new Best Western Hotel. This was made possible both by the use of the Amphibia system, applied in synergy with the other Volteco solutions, and by the meticulousness of the applicator 2g Restauri, partner of the Volteco H2Out Team.
