Working on a monumental building means finding the right balance between heritage conservation and technical performance.

The waterproofing of the roof garden at the Casino dell’Aurora, inside Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi in Rome, is an example of how specialized solutions can meet restoration needs without altering the identity of a place of extraordinary historical and artistic value.

The Challenge

The Casino dell’Aurora is one of the jewels of the Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi complex, built in the 17th century on the Quirinal Hill and famous for its roof garden and the masterpiece by Guido Reni that gives it its name. The garden’s roof, built in the 1970s and connected to the old structure, featured a delicate construction joint between elements from different eras, a point particularly vulnerable to water infiltration. The goal of the project was to restore the continuity of the waterproofing without compromising the architectural value of the monumental complex.

Volteco Solutions

The solution developed by Volteco, with the area representative, Mr. Bruno Evangelisti (Re.pa.im. Sas), included an integrated system designed to ensure waterproof continuity, elasticity, and durability.

The most critical point of the project, the joint between the 17th-century historic building and the roof garden slab built in the 1970s, was addressed by integrating the Bi Flex System, capable of absorbing differential movements between the structures while maintaining the watertight seal.

The entire surface was then waterproofed with Aquascud System 420, a high-performance elastic coating suitable for exterior surfaces exposed to atmospheric agents and the stresses typical of walkable roofs. The integration of the systems allowed for the creation of a continuous, reliable waterproof barrier compatible with the conservation requirements of the historical context.

The result

The intervention restored full functionality to the roof garden, eliminating the risk of water infiltration in one of the most delicate areas of the entire monumental complex.

The solution adopted combined historical heritage protection, technical reliability, and long-term durability, confirming the effectiveness of Volteco systems even in restoration projects on buildings of high architectural value, where every construction detail requires high performance and maximum respect for the existing structure.
