A strategic public work for the city of L’Aquila required a highly complex waterproofing project. Volteco provided an integrated solution to protect the underground tunnel connecting the Bus Terminal and the Abruzzo Regional Citadel, constructed by excavating against rock and smoothing all surfaces with shotcrete. Specialized waterproofing contractor Scafa Asfalti Srls , a partner of Team H2Out , performed the work using Volteco products, ensuring complete protection from moisture and infiltration.

The challenge

The tunnel, completely underground and built with a rock-level excavation using shotcrete, presented critical issues typical of underground environments: widespread humidity, risk of infiltration, and constant hydrostatic pressure on uneven surfaces.

This is a significant public infrastructure: it connects the bus terminal and the Collemaggio parking lot with the Abruzzo Regional Citadel, located at one of the main entrances to the city center. The characteristics of the construction required materials capable of perfectly adhering to uneven surfaces and withstanding continuous hydraulic stress.

Volteco solutions

The heart of the system is the Amphibia 3000 Grip membrane : self-sealing, self-repairing and self-adhering to concrete, it ensures maximum adhesion even on irregular surfaces such as shotcrete, guaranteeing long-term structural safety.

The overlaps between the membrane sheets were sealed with Bi Mastic , a single-component, elastic, silane-modified thixotropic adhesive and sealant, suitable for high-performance bonding between different materials, as a replacement or addition to mechanical fixings.

Passing bodies and cracks were treated with Akti -Vo 201 , a high-performance hydro-expansive mastic, which acts directly on the point of ingress of water.

The result

The integrated Volteco solution guaranteed:

  • Total protection from humidity and infiltrations in an underground environment exposed to hydrostatic pressure
  • Reduction of installation times thanks to self-sealing and direct adhesion on shotcrete
  • Durability over time with materials resistant to chemical and physical aging
  • Zero maintenance thanks to the self-repairing properties of the membrane

The L’Aquila Bus Terminal is an example of how advanced technologies can solve complex construction problems even in public buildings, providing the area with a safe and long-lasting infrastructure.
