Fort Marghera, the oldest and most important land defense work in the city of Venice, now hosts one of the most significant redevelopment interventions in the Veneto region (North-East part of Italy. Volteco has provided integrated waterproofing solutions for the Casermetta 9 complex, one of the two twin nineteenth-century buildings known as the Napoleonic Barracks.

The Challenge

Overlooking the bay of Forte Marghera, Casermetta 9 has come back to life with a public and cultural function, contributing to the enhancement and rebirth of one of the most important historical complexes in the city of Venice.

Originally intended for military functions in the Napoleonic era, the building was in a widespread state of decay mainly due to the infiltration of rainwater. The presence of rooting vegetation in the embankment had also compromised the walls and the top cornice, while water infiltration had also affected the interiors, making it necessary to restore and waterproof the entire structure.

Volteco solutions

Volteco has supplied a waterproofing system designed to meet the specific recovery needs of the Barracks, with the aim of preserving its historical value, improving the safety and consolidation of the structure, guaranteeing the breathability of the materials by avoiding the accumulation of humidity and thus ensuring long-lasting protection against the infiltration of groundwater and tidal water.

The intervention involved the underground structures and the connections between foundations, walls and vertical surfaces, where it was essential to ensure the continuity of waterproofing. To this end, an integrated Volteco system consisting of complementary solutions was adopted.

The bentonite membrane Volgrip LH – Light ensured the protection of the foundations, while Akti-Vo 201 and Akti-Vo BS were used for sealing joints, casting joints and construction details, also adapting to the irregularities of the support. The hydraulic seal of the casting joints was guaranteed by the Wt Construction hydroexpansive waterstop, while Bi Flex System made it possible to waterproof fittings and floor changes while maintaining the continuity of the waterproof barrier even in the presence of structural movements. Finally, the system was completed with Plastivo 250, a waterproof coating, modified polymer, two-component with high flexibility to protect surfaces and construction details, ensuring high adhesion and ability to absorb any micro-cracks.

The result

The integration of these systems has made it possible to achieve continuous waterproofing of the structures and the main critical points of the historic building, protecting it from infiltration without altering its architectural value.

The intervention represents an example of how modern waterproofing technologies can be used effectively in the recovery of the historical heritage, contributing to the conservation and future usability of Casermetta 9 in Forte Marghera.
