How do I waterproof a lift pit?

The lift pit is a technical room, in detail it consists of the lower space of the shaft that allows the lift to overtravel, which is subject to continuous dynamic stress.

Lift shafts are usually located in the lowest part of the supporting structure, in correspondence with basements and garages, they have a depth that varies from 0.50 m to about 2.5 m and are often subject to problems due to infiltrations of various types, often connected to incorrect design.

It can therefore happen that, as a result of the rising water table, insufficient attention paid to the waterproofing factor of the structure during the design phase allows water to infiltrate and create not only unpleasant inconveniences, but real problems.

Inside the pits, in fact, are all the mechanical elements useful for the operation of the lift, such as guides, oil recovery tanks and brakes, which, if submerged in water, can lead to a blockage in the use of the lift itself.

The most frequently encountered problems in this area are:

  • Presence of different materials and geometries
  • Limited spaces for prepare and apply materials
  • Limitation in concrete casting

What is the best waterproofing application?

The combined action of waterproofing elements for the treatment of joints and cracks, consisting of an elastic tape based on elastomeric polymers and a two-component epoxy adhesive, makes it possible to quickly and punctually resolve incorrect or failed waterproofing, even in the presence of a water table.

It is possible to continue with the application of a waterproof coating with high elasticity and versatility of use that will allow the waterproofing work to be completed, with total certainty of tightness even in the presence of hydraulic water pressure.

Is waterproofing Lift Pit Necessary?

Lift pit is the lowest and first place where water can enter in a basements and create problems for all upper floors and intermediate transfers. Waterproofing lift pit is a very delicate and essential operation because there are several different components (metal, concrete, anchoring, etc).

How Do I Stop My Lift Pit from Watering?

The First option to stop watering is placing a draining pump avoiding permanent presence of water. In case of localized leakage in a lift pit you can create a drainage, carry out the water and then repair the leakage permanently with rapid mortar or hydro-swellable materials. Another option, when water is down again is to repair permanently leakages with mortars and then waterproof permanently with elastomeric tape and flexible coating able to resist hydraulic water pressure.

Do Lift Pits Need Drainage?

A good drainagwe is always recommended even if, in presence of permanent water presence or continuous rain, can not be sufficient. In this case it is always suggested to combine efficient drainage with permenat waterproofing operations.
